A Very Short History: From the Mouth of Hell to 1938<\/h2>\n

For centuries, locals knew about the Grave \u2014 a massive sinkhole in the limestone outside Castellana, with a shaft of daylight falling into blackness below. Legend said it was the mouth of hell, and nobody was in a hurry to find out.<\/p>\n

People thought the vapors from the hole were damned souls.<\/span> <\/strong>For centuries, mist rising from the Grave at dusk \u2014 mixed with bats darting out \u2014 was believed to be the souls of suicides trying and failing to rise to heaven. Nobody went near it after dark.<\/p>\n

The truth is older and stranger. The caves formed in limestone laid down 90 to 100 million years ago, when Puglia lay under an ancient sea. Rainwater spent millions of years dissolving the rock from the inside out, carving a system that runs 3,348 meters long and 122 meters deep.<\/p>\n

The human story starts on January 23, 1938, when the speleologist, Franco Anelli was lowered into the Grave on a rope. Edging along one wall, he found a narrow passage that opened, after a few dozen meters, into a cavern so enormous his acetylene lamp couldn’t reach the walls or ceiling. He’d found the Cavern of Monuments \u2014 and over the following years, Anelli mapped the entire system. The piazza at the cave entrance is named for him today.<\/p>\n

The town has celebrated every January since, with processions and fireworks.<\/p>\n

Hell in the Cave<\/strong> (summer into September): the legend comes full circle. This is Puglia’s largest underground aerial show \u2014 dancers, actors, and musicians performing Dante’s Inferno inside the Grave itself, 75 minutes, genuinely spectacular. It sells out; book through TicketOne when dates are announced.<\/p>\n

Actual music concerts too<\/strong>.<\/span> The caves are a listed concert venue \u2014 Francesco De Gregori played a piano-and-voice set there in December 2024, and shows go back years on setlist.fm. The acoustics in that stone are supposed to be unreal.<\/p>\n

Speleonight tours<\/span> run in summer<\/strong> \u2014 the caves by lamplight, a completely different atmosphere.<\/p>\n

The caves are at Piazza Franco Anelli, about 1.5 km outside Castellana Grotte, in the Metropolitan City of Bari \u2014 roughly 45 minutes from Bari, 40 minutes from Alberobello, and about an hour and a half from Lecce or Galatina. There’s a large parking area at the entrance.<\/p>\n

By train, Castellana Grotte is on the Bari\u2013Putignano\u2013Martina Franca line, then a short taxi to the caves.<\/p>\n

In La Grave, a giant cone of sunlight pours through the natural skylight and travels across the cavern with the hours and seasons. It lands on the “Ciclopi” (Cyclops)<\/strong><\/em>\u2014 a cluster of stalagmites that look like sea giants rising out of a stormy sea. It’s a slow natural light show, different every visit.<\/p>\n

They filmed an Alien movie down there<\/strong>.<\/span> Alien 2: On Earth<\/em> (1980), the infamous Italian knockoff of Ridley Scott’s Alien<\/em>, shot all its underground scenes inside the caves over three weeks.\u00a0 Earlier films too \u2014 a Mario Bava Hercules movie in 1961, a Monicelli Casanova ’70<\/em> scene in 1965<\/p>\n

There’s a second cave system<\/strong> you can’t visit.<\/span> The tourist route is 3 km, but side branches, just as spectacular, are closed to the public \u2014 speleologists only.<\/p>\n

Interesting creatures<\/strong>– Living fossils in the dark.<\/span> The caves host troglobites \u2014 animals that lost their eyes and color adapting to permanent darkness. Some are genuine living fossils: their ancestors hid underground while their surface relatives went extinct.\u00a0 There are species found nowhere else.\u00a0 Several are named for the caves themselves: the isopods Murgeoniscus anellii<\/em> and Castellanethes sanfilippoi<\/em>, the beetle Tychobythinus anelli<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The town renamed itself for cave<\/strong>.<\/span> It was just “Castellana” until the caves became famous \u2014 the success was so big they added “Grotte” to the town’s name.<\/p>\n

Anelli landed in garbage.<\/span><\/strong> When Franco Anelli was lowered into the Grave on January 23, 1938, the bottom was covered in rubbish that had been tossed in over generations. He cleared it, found the hidden passage, and kept going.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
