Castro, the Pearl of Salento, offers a dramatic cliffside coastal landscape that feel authentically Salento.<\/p>\r\n

History<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n

Castrum Minervae, comes from ancient Roman times and the presence of a fortress\/temple dedicated to Minerva. That promontory, (identified by archaeologists as the site of Castro), was a guide for sailors but also a spiritual and cultural crossroad for Greeks, Messapians and finally the Romans.\u00a0 According to legend, Aeneas offered a poetic description of the Sanctuary of Minerva temple from his ship as he escaped from Troy.<\/p>\r\n

In Book III of the Aeneid, Virgil recounts how Aeneas sailed from Troy to Italy and became the progenitor of the Roman people. Describing the landing spot as \u201ca port dominated by a high promontory with a majestic temple on top consecrated to the goddess Minerva\u201d.<\/p>\r\n

In 2015 excavations discovered such a temple at the end of Vico della Minerva;\u00a0 a large headless statue of the goddess\u00a0 \u2013 Aeneas is believed to have landed in Castro.<\/p>\r\n

Grotto Zinzulusa is featured in Atlas Obscura<\/span><\/span><\/u><\/span> because it perfectly matches the platform’s focus on hidden, unusual, and geologically wondrous locations.\u00a0\u00a0Specifically, the site is recognized for several distinct, “weird-but-true” characteristics.\u00a0 While many sea caves are tight and cramped, Grotta Zinzulusa opens up into a massive, subterranean chamber known as the Duomo<\/span><\/span>. It features a monumental, 24-meter-high cathedral-like ceiling that creates an eerie, hollow acoustic environment deep inside the cliffside<\/div>\r\n

In the local Salentine dialect, zinzuli<\/em> translates to torn scraps of cloth or rags. The bizarre, tattered shaping of the stalactites resembles hanging, petrified laundry, which inspired a dark local folklore legend about a cruel baron who forced his daughter to dress in rags.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Archaeologists have found structural and material evidence proving that humans used these deep limestone chambers as shelters during both the Paleolithic era and ancient Roman times<\/p>\r\n

The cave is globally famous in scientific communities for the Cocito<\/span><\/span>, an underground lake at the very back. It features a stratified ecosystem where freshwater and saltwater sit layered together without mixing, serving as the only ecosystem on Earth home to Typhlocaris salentina<\/em>\u2014a completely blind, prehistoric white cave shrimp that evolved over thousands of generations in total darkness.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Walking to <\/span>Grotta Zinzulusa<\/span><\/u> from the nearby port at <\/span>Castro Marina<\/span><\/u><\/span> is a scenic, straightforward journey taking roughly 25 minutes to cover about 1 mile (1.6 km) along the coast.<\/div>\r\n

The main route involves a mix of paved roads and cliffside pedestrian paths.\u00a0Head north out of the Castro Marina port area via Via Litoranea per Santa Cesarea (SP358)<\/span>. The road winds uphill along the cliffs, offering panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea.<\/span> The Descent: Follow the prominent roadside signs for the cave until you reach Piazzale Zinzulusa<\/span><\/u>, the main square and parking area at the dead end of the access road.<\/span>\u00a0The Cliff Walkway:\u00a0you will leave the road and walk down a pedestrian stone walkway carved directly into the side of the limestone cliff face. This path leads directly into the mouth of the cave.\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\r\n

Just 7k from castro….Santa Cesarea- <\/strong>These waters flow at various temperatures from 4 caves.\u00a0 The waters include chlorinated sulphurous Iodine with a thermalization process that brings the temperature to 36-37 degrees C(or approximately 97F).\u00a0 These waters are thought to benefit a whole host of ailments and\/or- just feel good. \u00a0Oooooh!\u00a0 The baths are open between May and November and you can also treat yourself to a number of massages, mud, and hot mineral treatments.<\/p>\r\n
